Triumph Factory Racing’s Guillem Farres has delivered another perfect result in the MX2 World Championship to win both races and secure overall victory at the MXGP of Rep. of South Africa. In addition to claiming his third Grand Prix win of the season, the strong points haul sees the Spaniard significantly reduce his deficit to the series leader. Teammate Camden McLellan was close to joining Farres on the podium, finishing a close fifth overall at his home GP.

Having won every race on his way to two consecutive Grand Prix victories, Farres is really hitting his stride as the series enters its second half. Two rounds ago he sat 41 points behind the series leader, and now, following his impressive run of form, the gap has reduced to just 14 with eight rounds remaining.

In the opening moto, Farres started third and moved into first with an impressive pass on the leading two riders. From there, the Spaniard maintained his lead to pick up his third straight Grand Prix race win and his eighth of the season.

Race two was even more impressive. After claiming the holeshot, Farres delivered a faultless ride to the finish to win the moto and the overall. Following his exceptional back-to-back Grand Prix victories, Guillem remains second in the series, and now sits just 14 points adrift of series leader Sacha Coenen.

With high hopes of impressing his home crowd, McLellan was frustrated not to finish on the podium. Placing fifth in the opening moto was a strong start to the day, and in race two he reached third before he was pushed back to fourth. This ultimately ended McLellan's hopes of an overall podium, and he claimed fifth on the day. Leaving South Africa, Camden sits fourth in the standings.

Up next is the home race for Triumph. The MXGP of Great Britain takes place across the weekend of July 18-19 and hosts round 12 of the campaign.

Guillem Farres

“It was a really good weekend in South Africa. I had a good feeling from free practice, and we carried the momentum from Portugal into this weekend. In the first moto, I was third after the start, made a couple of quick passes on the opening lap, and put myself into the lead. From there, the guys behind kept the pressure on, so I had to work hard for the win. The second moto was, let's say, a little easier. I pushed really hard on the opening laps to build a good gap, and from there I just managed the lead until the end. I'm really happy with the weekend, the team, and the bike. We'll keep working hard and getting closer to our goal.”

“That’s Sunday wrapped up here in South Africa. It was a pretty good day with some ups and downs, some good riding, and some good moments, but my starts let me down once again. I really need to figure that out because if I can get out of the gate up front, I think we’ll be in a good position. My riding was good and everything else felt good, and it was a lot of fun racing in front of the home crowd. A big thank you to everyone who came out to support me.”

Vincent Bereni – Triumph Factory Racing Team Manager

“Round 11 in South Africa was one of those overseas races where we didn't really know what to expect. When we arrived, the track was really nice and very American-style. I felt like it suited our bikes and our riders quite well. I was a little surprised by just how fast the track was and how quickly everyone was riding, so it was difficult to make a big difference. On Saturday, the boys did a really good job with a strong qualifying race, finishing second and third, so the weekend looked promising. Guillem clearly dominated on Sunday with a 1-1 result for the second round in a row. For Camden, it was tougher. He had a bad start in the first moto and had to come through the field, but his pace wasn't quite strong enough. In the second moto, he came back determined, made a lot of passes, and finished fourth after battling for third for pretty much the whole second half of the race. It wasn't the result we were expecting from him, but we'll work with him and help him get back to the front. We have a weekend off now, but the work continues as we prepare for the Triumph’s home Grand Prix in the UK.”
