Alonso López Storms to Triumph-Powered Victory at Motorland Aragón
Alonso López secured his first Moto2™ World Championship victory since the opening round of the 2024 season today, dominating from pole position to a lights-to-flag Grand Prix win. The Spanish rider was joined on the podium by Izan Guevara, who withstood a late charge from David Alonso, who completed the podium.
Moto2™ World Championship action returned this weekend as the 2026 season arrived at the famous MotorLand Aragón circuit.
The pace was electric from the off with the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS-powered machines breaking lap records from official timed practice on Friday afternoon.
Despite soaring temperatures and the low-grid nature of the 5km circuit, qualifying delivered a fast, frantic 15-minute session, with López emerging on top for his first pole position in 1162 days, while Guevara and Dani Holgado rounded out the front row for Sunday’s 19-lap Grand Prix of Aragón.
As the lights went out López took the early charge, holding his place at the front while Guevara and Holgado held firm inside the top three.
As the leading trio settled into their race, eyes were on Collin Veijer, who had burst through to fourth in the early stages and mounted an early attack on Holgado for a position on the podium later in the race. The Dutch rider had earlier squeezed through on series leader Manuel Gonzalez before pouncing on Holgado at half race distance.
The second half of the Grand Prix was a close affair, with the top nine riders covered by three seconds and a six-rider fight for the final podium place. As the laps ticked away, those who had managed their tyres over the opening ten laps started to reap the rewards, with Alonso starting to emerge a podium favourite.
The Aspar Team rider shot ahead of Gonzalez at a second attempt, though the series leader was determined to hold on to his position before being forced to relinquish fifth, then losing another place to teammate Senna Agius. Meanwhile, Alonso’s charge continued as he passed Veijer on lap 15 and closed the gap to Guevara ahead.
A grandstand finish was on the cards as the Colombian edged ever closer to the rear of Guevara’s Triumph-powered machine, but despite his best efforts. An attempt into the corkscrew section didn’t pay off for Alonso, who then had another look onto the back straight, cutting underneath Guevara on the exit of the bus stop chicane. Ahead into the final corner, Guevara was able to turn tighter, repassing Alonso and holding on to second behind race winner López.
Agius secured fourth position from tenth on the grid with Ivan Ortola fighting through from 14th to fifth. Gonzalez, who had dropped as low as eighth, finished inside the top six ahead of Holgado, Deniz Öncü, Alex Escrig and Adrian Huertas.
The Moto2 series returns to the Adriatic Coast and the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for Round 14 of the Championship across the 11-13 September weekend.
